Supplements are the New Black

I’m sure we all know people who say supplements aren’t needed to have a healthy lifestyle. They probably also say that all you need is a commitment to exercise and to a strict healthful diet! Well, they aren’t completely wrong! However, supplements make it much easier for your body to continue to grow and retain the nutrients needed to build muscle and reach fitness goals. You do need exercise and a healthy diet, but this strategy falls short of providing all that your body needs!  So I’m going to be blatantly honest with you, if you didn’t catch my drift already, YOU NEED SUPPLEMENTS! Especially if you want to build muscle or lose weight!

The problem with just eating right and not including supplements is, in today’s world we just don’t have all the proper nutrients in our food that we had 100 years ago. Our soil is depleted and majority of our food is contaminated by either chemicals, pesticides, and even the air. That’s a different conversation for a different day though! Besides the reasons to take supplements to increase fitness levels, we should also be taking supplements just to live a healthy life. Let’s be honest, do you get stressed ever, do you eat sugar sometimes, have you ever taken antibiotics, do you breath air everyday? Yeah, I thought so! You need to at least be on a good probiotic! Preferably one that isn’t in the freezer section of your health foods store. Another important aspect to consider is the fact that blood sugar, inflammation and gut health are the three main factors to think about when trying to find health and wellness and when trying to decide what line of supplements to invest in! I’m sure you know I’m a Plexus Ambassador by now, so I can tell you what I think is the best line of products! Hehe! However, just because my opinion is biased doesn’t mean I’m not being honest when it comes to what you need in your supplements. Ample research shows gut health, blood sugar regulation, and reduction of inflammation will help with overall health!

Besides a good probiotic, a good protein supplement is a necessary addition to your diet! Protein is essential for muscle growth and development! Make sure it has no artificial flavors, is grass fed, and cold processed! I’m sorry, but you can’t get Cookies and Cream flavor without some artificial flavors. So take a break from reading this and throw that out right now. I don’t care how expensive it was, you are just taking one step forward and two steps back! A future post will discuss all of the important factors of a good protein.

Lastly, I want to cover the importance of a multivitamin! Most everyone know that vitamins are necessary. Pretty much all multivitamins are going to contain the same mixture of vitamins and minerals, simply because everyone knows what is needed! However, there are a lot of people who don’t take a multivitamin because they tend to make them feel sick! Especially if they are not taken with food! So, people often skip them or forget to take them! Consistency is key in any supplement regimen, meaning you should really find a multivitamin that doesn’t make you sick! I know I wouldn’t be consistent with something that didn’t make me feel good!  Also, aloe added to a multivitamin adds to absorption of vitamins up to 300%! It helps absorb nutrients that are in all of your food as well as other supplements that are being taken! Whatever your health goals are, the importance of supplements are pretty universal! I would love to offer more advice or guide anyone who may have more questions about what’s the best approach to starting a supplement regimen! Just remember, wherever you may be in your health and wellness journey, it’s better than not starting at all! You can achieve anything you set your mind to, even though that sounded totally cliche! 

This is your Brain on Omegas…

Okay, so maybe this isn’t literally YOUR brain on omegas, simply because these are just words. The point is though, omega fatty acids are essential to optimal brain health. Now, I’m going to try to paint a picture for you, imagine your brain was just scanned to look at your brain activity. Well without enough omega 3 fatty acids, your brain will probably be pretty dull looking, meaning there would be less yellow and red colors popping up on the scan. Now if you were getting your essential omegas, your brain would be full of vibrant colors. Everyone wants to be vibrant, and I’m pretty sure everyone wants a fully functioning brain! I’m not saying that not having enough omegas is going to instantly lead to a brain that won’t work, but chronic deficiencies might lead to problems down the road! That’s why you should take me seriously when I say, work hard now, when you feel you don’t have to, so that way down the road, you won’t have to!

I’m sure you’re reading this post because you actually want to know why omegas are necessary and not just be told that they are, so let’s get to it! There are two types of omega 3 fatty acids, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).  We need both of these in order to function properly. The cerebral cortex in the brain needs DHA in order to function. The cerebral cortex is responsible for memory, emotion, attention, language, creativity, along with many other functions. Now think, if your cerebral cortex couldn’t function correctly, you would be having trouble will all of those functions listed above. We wouldn’t want that, now would we? There’s a quote by Mehmet Murat ildan, “Small minds just like small stones can never create giant waves.” People who have an omega 3 deficiency actually are known to have smaller brains, with less brain activity. That means no big waves for them! So get on that omega 3 routine!

Omega 3 is not the only beneficial omega. Omega 6 also plays a significant role in our health. However, omega 6 in high doses, can actually negate health benefits. The appropriate ratio between omega 6 and omega 3 is 2:1, however, in today’s world, it’s more like 15:1. This is because of the ridiculous amount of fast and processed foods. The best kind of omega 6 is found in green leafy veggies, such as kale, lettuce, and broccoli. Try to stay away from the omega 6 in processed foods.

While most people get omegas from fish in their diet, not everyone will be the same way. Some people don’t like fish, and others may be worried about the amount of mercury in our fish. Now, some would say to just suck it up and eat the fish, because you need it. However, there are several omega supplements out there. Some better than others. There is also other foods, besides fish that will give us omegas. The problem is, we needs a lot more kale, for example to equal the omegas found in fish. Therefore, supplements are a good idea. Just make sure to do your research, that way you can get a superior supplement. Again, not always is the most expensive the best, but sometimes that is the case. That’s why research is so important! So take your health seriously and do it! Y’all take time to make a decision when buying a car, but not always are the same precautions taken with our health. I promise you, it will be worth it!

Never Have I Ever…Taken a Probiotic

Well you should have! I’m sure your doctor has at least once told you that you needed one. Weather it be during an antibiotic dose, or whether you just needed to amp up your immune system. Not always is it best to take medication, however, I promise your doctor is right when he says take a probiotic. Obviously antibiotic means anti-life. It is meant to kill the bad AND the good when you have an infection or a virus. The downside to this is while you’re getting rid of the infection or whatever it may be, you’re also getting rid of the good bacteria in your body that helps fight off infection, and helps your immune system. So the importance of a probiotic is somewhat conspicuous.

I know I personally have fallen shout when it comes to listening to my doctor’s advice about taking a probiotic while also on an antibiotic. However, that was before I knew the significant importance of gut health. As well as the huge impact it has on overall health.

Antibiotics play a critical role in the need for probiotics, but they are not the only significant factor. Stress, junk food/processed food, and polluted air also alter gut health. Now, your excuse for not being on antibiotics very often, isn’t good enough. Even if you are never stressed and only eat “healthy” food you still live in a society with polluted air. Not to mention, the fact that our soil is pretty depleted from critical nutrients. So if i wasn’t clear before, YOU NEED A PROBIOTIC.  

However, not all probiotics are created equal. When you walk into a whole foods store, and ask where the probiotics are, the store clerk is going to point you in the direction of a refrigerator, with 50 or more different choices. Each of them having billions of CFU (colony forming units). CFU is basically the amount of good bacteria particles that will continue to grow in a given dose. Have you ever wondered why they say you need so many CFU? Well, it’s because the way these probiotics are made, they need to be cold. So, the manufacturers are not expecting very many of them to survive the long travel from the mouth to the small intestine. Think about it, if something needs to be refrigerated, the second it hits the mouth, they will die simply because the mouth is not an accurate living environment for good bacteria.

However, there are probiotics out there made to survive the journey. I happen to represent a pretty ninja rockstar one. Just because I support a certain probiotic doesn’t discredit anything I’ve said. I’ve done my research and you should too. You need to take your health seriously. Behave and don’t Crave: How to Deal with Cravings and How to Crave Healthier Foods

It is said that it takes 21 days to create a habit. Well at least to start getting into the routine of things. This means, if you ate an apple a day for 21 days, most likely on the 22nd day, your body will naturally want to have an apple. However, we all know sugar is this addictive substance that tastes so good, but really kills the mood when you realize you weigh 10 more pounds than the week before! Am I right? Going along with this idea, if you ate a candy bar a day for 21 days, you’ll definitely want another the next day, and most likely a couple of days after that. So, you might be wondering, how do I combat those unhealthy cravings? Many would say, “just think about something else.” As simple as that sounds, speaking from experience, that is a really hard thing to do!

The truth of the matter is, there is no “quick fix” when it comes to dealing with cravings! It takes time, and patience. I know, that sounds like such a drab. However, it is totally worth it when you are finally achieving your health goals, and you just feel better! In order to switch your mindset and cravings, you need to get on a consistent eating schedule. This is probably the most important part! If you schedule yourself to eat 6-8 times a day, you won’t reach that point in which you’re so hungry you could eat a cow, and then end up eating all of the food in your fridge! Next step is to make sure you don’t deprive yourself of the food you are craving. Moderation is key. Instead of having your famous bowl full of 6 scoops of ice cream everyday, try one scoop once or twice a week! This will naturally help ease your body off of it. You also need to start listening to your body, and notice when you are actually hungry, compared to just bored. If you aren’t hungry, don’t eat the last slice of pizza from the box.

Another factor to consider when trying to combat cravings, is supplementation. The Plexus Triplex helps to really get your body healthy from the inside out. I’m H20 Intolerant

We all have that one friend who says they don’t like water. Or they never drink water because they don’t think they need it. Just like the little fish in finding nemo who says he’s h2o intolerant. If you didn’t catch my drift; there is no such thing as a fish that is allergic to water. Just like fish need water to survive, people need it just as much! The only difference is, we need it to fuel our bodily systems, fish need it to breathe! Up to 60% of the human body is water. Now we use that water going through everyday life. We use extra when we do things that make us sweat, even if it’s just being lazy by the pool. So, we must continue to replenish that source of water.

Besides water being needed for everyday living, it has many other important uses. Water is used in digestion, absorption of nutrients, regulation of body temperature, and even the creation of saliva! And you’re telling me, you don’t like water! Well you better start liking it…or else! One of the nasty side effects of not having enough water throughout the day is headaches! Oh my goodness, I don’t ever want another dehydration headache again! Those are so brutal!

Ladies, I’m talking to you now, we all want our skin to look young, smooth, and beautiful. Well, more often than not, if you aren’t getting enough water, your skin can start to look like a drag! So drink your water, because I want to see all of your beautiful faces, full of light, just as much as you do!

Now gentlemen, this one is for you! I know the goal in the gym is to get as “swole” as you can! Am I right? You have got to impress the ladies! I’m kidding, you should be doing the whole health thing, for yourself! To better improve you health and wellness. Now onto my point, if you aren’t getting enough water when exercising, along with electrolytes, the cells in our muscles start to shrivel! That word shrivel should scare you! I’m sure you really don’t want your muscles shriveling! Plus is also causes extra soreness and muscle fatigue.

For those of you who know water is important, but just forget to get enough in a day, here are a few tips to help you out:

  1. Keep a GIANT water bottle with you wherever you go! And by giant I mean 32 ounces, is probably enough! Make sure you feel it up a couple times a day though.
  2. Drinking half your bodyweight in ounces a day is a good rule to follow! However, if you are exercising a lot, you need more!
  3. There are a lot of cool apps out there! I know, there is an app for everything, even water intake! My favorite is called Daily Water balance tracker. It’s awesome! It sends you a reminder, and allows you to track your intake.
  4. Drink a glass of water before every meal and snack! This will one, help you get your needed intake, but also help with hunger and cravings! More often than not, we are just thirsty, not hungry!
  5. Eating more fruits and vegetables will add to your hydration because they have a high water content.

I hope this was helpful and convinced you to start drinking more water! Even if you don’t like it! Sometimes we have to do things we don’t like, drinking water being one of them! However, I promise you, you’ll feel better overall! 

70% Diet, 30% Exercise

For the longest time I thought, if only I could get myself to go to the gym consistently, I’ll finally start hitting my fitness goals! I was at that point in my life where I wanted so many things to happen and I wanted achieve success in everything, but if I’m being honest with myself, I was lazy with a capital L! The few times I actually made it to the gym I felt super frustrated because I worked incredibly hard, or at least I thought so. All I know is, I thought I was working super hard, and then I would be super sore and it was just a pain, because I wasn’t seeing any results! We’ve all been there right? I soon realized you have to actually put in the work to progress down the path of health and wellness! I don’t mean going to the gym once maybe twice a week and lift five pound free weights, and run on the treadmill for three minutes. Granted, everyone starts somewhere, but the important thing is, you have to grow. You have to push yourself, and yeah, it is totally okay to start with five pound weights (I did) but you have to continue to build up and inch yourself closer to your goals every time. There are plenty of weight lifting plans and layouts available to you! I suggest you find one you like and really try to stay committed to it. The people who planned those, most likely know what they are talking about and have a lot of experience in the matter.

While regular exercise is essential to achieving fitness, progress is truly gained or lost in the kitchen. Your hard work in the gym will not erase the effects of improperly fueling your body. I personally had a terrible addiction to sugar, which is a whole different story, but the fact of the matter is, I was taking one step forward in the gym, but like five steps back with my diet. The hard part is no matter how hard I tried to eat healthy, I could not combat my sugar cravings! So I was still falling short with my fitness goals. Needless to say, Plexus helped with my sugar cravings, but it was only then, when I actually had a healthy diet going, that I was truly reaching my goals. Not to say along the way I didn’t make progress, but it was slow and difficult. My poor diet made getting to the gym hard because I had no energy what so ever! My body was pushing itself to crazy limits, but I wasn’t giving it all the nutrients it needed to keep going.

There are a variety of tips and tricks to help you tackle the diet part of fitness. I’m going to name a few that I think are pretty important.

  1.       You want to start your day off on the right foot. Make sure your breakfast is high in protein and low in sugar. The protein will help give a full feeling as well as giving you the energy to conquer the day.  Not having sugar first thing in the morning doesn’t allow your blood to spike and then later crash.
  2.       Eat regularly and frequently, don’t wait until the end of the day to pig out. This is also important because if you don’t have enough calories in your system your body starts to turn muscle into fat. Essentially, it’s going into survival mode because it doesn’t have enough energy.
  3.       Drink LOTS of water. Hydrating your body is just as important as fueling your body. Remember to drink half your bodyweight in ounces, even if you aren’t exercising!
  4.       If you have a sugar addiction like me, one, you need to get your gut in check, but two, when you find yourself craving something sugary, eat a piece of fruit. A fruit that is super sweet, like mango, or strawberries. This will satisfy the sugar craving, without the regret of consuming unneeded artificial sugars and flavorings.

Regardless of where you are starting or where you are at in your health and wellness journey, keeping the 70/30 rule in mind will really help you reach your fitness goals. Not to mention, it just makes you feel better when you have the proper nutrients at the right times! Take care of your body because it is worth it! We are blessed to have a vessel that does so much for us! Take advantage of it, take care of it now, because you’ll regret it in a couple of years when you start to feel that age might not be just a number and your poor decisions have come back to haunt you.

 

Broccoli, Brownies and Weight Loss

Many of us would love to lose a couple pounds here and a couple pounds there, but if you’re like me, brownies are just a hard thing to resist! Not to mention fried food and other sweets! The majority of the time, losing weight means a strict meal plan, which means no brownies! Say what? The harsh reality of dieting is, it will get you that killer body, however, dieting just isn’t very reasonable. It’s also something that is very difficult to do long term. You might be asking yourself, “well then how in the world do I lose weight, without a strict diet, and still am able to eat brownies?” The answer is simple! You need the proper nutrients in your body, to help curb cravings, but also help burn fat, and lose inches. It’s also important to eat brownies (as well as all other food) in moderation! But hey, if you have the proper supplements and don’t crave them as much anymore, then you are set! We want to focus on creating a healthy lifestyle, not a short-term diet! If that means allowing yourself your favorite foods in moderation, by all means, do it!
